Roles & Functions

The duties of AMS can be divided into emergency operations and regular services.

Emergency Operations

In times of emergency and natural disaster, we will supplement the regular medical and health services by providing triage/treatment to the injured on the spot, conveying casualties to hospitals, and help caring for patients at acute hospitals.

When Tropical Cyclone Warning Signal No. 8 or above is hoisted, we will deploy members to designated ambulance depots of the Fire Services Department to support ambulance services, and designated temporary shelters of the Home Affairs Department to provide first aid treatment to the members of the public in need.

In addition, in the unlikely event of a nuclear accident, the AMS will be charged with the responsibility of manning radiation monitoring centres and carrying out the decontamination procedures under the nuclear emergency contingency plan.

Regular Services

The AMS provides a variety of services for citizens, such as providing first-aid coverage for community events including the Walks for Million and the Fireworks Displays, manning first-aid posts in country parks during weekends and general holidays, as well as providing first aid bicycle services in cycle tracks. Other daily duties include teaching first aid skills and knowledge to civil servants and employees of large organizations. First aid qualifications which are recognized under the Occupational Safety and Health Ordinance will be issued upon completion of the course.

We have a fleet of non-emergency ambulances for providing point-to-point non-emergency ambulance transfer service (NEATS) between residences and medical institutions, clinics, hospitals or district health centres for Hong Kong citizens with special medical care.

Our members are assisting the Department of Health in running 18 methadone clinics, their duties include administration, nursing, accounting, shroffing, dispensing and other clinical-related tasks.
